Health Level Seven International has strengthened its ties with the Denmark-based International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation.

IHTSDO has provided HL7 with a free "public good" license to the SNOMED CT terminology codes and descriptions.  This will aid HL7 in producing SNOMED-enabled international products or specifications to advance interoperability across nations.

While use of SNOMED codes and descriptions would be free to HL7 for international work, usage fees would apply for country-specific use.  HL7 also is considering using the IHTSDO Workbench to maintain its vocabulary. Use of common tools by both groups would improve harmonization of their work, according to the organizations.

Further, both organizations are reviewing their internal processes to streamline requests for additions and amendments to SNOMED CT codes. IHTSDO also will support Release 2 of the Common Terminology Services Standard, called CTS2, to provide a consistent interface into terminologies in electronic health records systems.
