Consultancy KPMG will develop the protocols for HIPAA privacy rule compliance audits of covered entities, and conduct the audits under a $9 million contract with the Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights.

"Site visits conducted as part of every audit would include interviews with leadership (e.g., CIO, privacy officer, legal counsel, health information management/medical records director), examination of physical features and operations, consistency of process to policy and observation of compliance with regulatory requirements," according to a synopsis of the contract.

Under the contract, OCR expects KPMG to conduct 150 audits by the end of 2012. More information is available here.
