Wil Yu, the special assistant of innovations and research at HHS, will be the keynote speaker July 24 at the Healthcare Analytics Symposium and Expo, sponsored by Health Data Management. The event is scheduled for July 24-25 at the Hyatt McCormick Place in Chicago.

Yu will discuss the growing ecosystem of innovators who are embracing analytics and other tools to help reinvent American health care, and spotlight the ways the Department of Health and Human Services is supporting, enabling and engaged in that innovation.

Another topic of his presentation will be an analysis of how incentives in the health care system are shifting to reward improvements in quality, health, and value, and how key information to power these improvements is being liberated at multiple levels. As the magnitude of “data liquidity” increases, it becomes essential to create a robust infrastructure to adequately secure, analyze and communicate, according to Yu.

Yu leads several innovation grant programs at HHS and created the "Investing in Innovations" program, i2, which utilizes prizes and challenges to spur early stage innovations and community building. He is also the director of the Strategic Health IT Advanced Research Projects program, funding breakthrough developments in health IT. Key innovations supported by his office include: mobile health, predictive analytics, gaming in health care, and clinical/business intelligence.

He is also a senior advisor at the newly formed CMS Innovation Center, assisting with initiatives supporting the exploration of new approaches to the development of innovative care delivery and payment models, including accountable care organizations.
