Justin Barnes, a well-connected industry veteran, is leaving his post as vice president of industry and government affairs at software firm Greenway Health at the end of May.

Barnes, past chair of the HIMSS Electronic Health Record Association who has frequently represented vendors on Capitol Hill, is starting a couple of companies that will not compete with EHR firms. He’ll stay active in advocacy activities.

Presently limited in how much he can divulge, Barnes says the companies will target the needs of accountable care organizations, focusing on supporting with technology and advisory services, patient engagement and management initiatives as consumerism increases in healthcare, as well as cost management and data exchange.

Barnes initially is self-funding the companies out of the gate, but has opportunities for outside funding. He says that his parting with Greenway after 11 years is amicable. “My time at Greenway was a blessing, but now is the time to move onto a new chapter.”
