Drug and disease reference content software vendor Epocrates Inc. has started beta testing of a mobile- and Web-based electronic health records system it is developing to target solo and small physician practices.

The San Mateo, Calif.-based vendor's foray into EHRs is significant because it already has 315,000 physicians accessing its reference content via mobile computing devices.

The EHR includes embedded reference content and later versions will integrate with medical speech recognition software from Nuance Communications under a new agreement. The EHR will run on desktops and any mobile computing device, according to the vendor.
