Drug and disease reference content software vendor Epocrates Inc. has announced availability of a first-phase mobile- and Web-based electronic health records system it is developing to target solo and small physician practices.

The San Mateo, Calif.-based vendor's foray into EHRs is significant because it already has 320,000 physicians accessing its reference content via mobile computing devices.

The Web-hosted version of the EHR includes patient encounter notes, integration with laboratory systems, e-prescribing and Epocrates' drug content. The system initially is available via an iPhone for remote patient record look-up and schedule access, and e-prescribing. The company continues to develop the system to meet EHR meaningful use requirements, and will add such features as a patient portal and speech recognition software, and expand mobile connectivity to additional devices.
