E-Prescribing Adoption Goes Over 50 Percent

National electronic prescribing network operator Surescripts recently announced that 52 percent of office-based physicians–about 291,000–now actively e-prescribe.


National electronic prescribing network operator Surescripts recently announced that 52 percent of office-based physicians--about 291,000--now actively e-prescribe.

That compares with less than 10 percent three years ago, according to the Arlington, Va.-based vendor. Including nurse practitioners and physician assistants, Surescripts now has 357,000 active prescribers on its network that can link to 94 percent of retail pharmacies.

The 10 states with the highest e-prescribing rates, according to the annual research, are Massachusetts, Delaware, Michigan, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Iowa, Oregon and North Carolina.
