The Food and Drug Administration has granted approval of a Web-based diabetes management program for use without a prescription. The agency a year ago approved the program for use with a prescription.

SymCare Personalized Health Solutions Inc. of West Chester, Penn., administers the program, called inTouch. It enables participants to transmit glucose levels from a glucose meter to a secure Web site, or download the results to a cell phone, then upload the readings to the site. Participants select clinicians and others who may access their data on the site.

The program also shows trends in meter readings and HbA1c test results, and offers personalized diabetes education. More information is available at symcare.com.
