Five delivery systems in Michigan have created a health information exchange spanning much of the state.
Founding members of the HIE, called Michigan Health Connect, are Lakeland Health System, Metro Health, Northern Michigan Regional Health System, Spectrum Health and Trinity Health. The HIE covers 39 counties serving 2.2 million residents and more than 3,500 providers.
The delivery systems collaborated on various data exchange initiatives before formalizing the HIE as a standalone corporate entity. Services previously deployed included lab/radiology ordering and results delivery, and interfaces between reference labs and electronic health records serving more than 460 practices and hospitals. These initiatives were done with no federal or state grant funding.
Michigan Health Connect uses HIE platform software from Medicity Inc., Salt Lake City. More information is available at michiganhealthconnect.org.
