In a final rule setting 2015 payment rates for skilled nursing facilities, the federal government reiterates a commitment to accelerate SNF use of health information exchange technology.
While breaking no new ground, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in the rule says it continues to consider a number of incentives to support SNF exchange of data with other provider organizations.
These include encouraging health information technology and HIE adoption through Medicare and Medicaid SNF payment policies, adopting common standards and certification requirements for interoperable HIE, improving privacy and security across all HIE-focused initiatives, and developing governance of health information networks.
CMS notes in the final rule that its aspirations of HIE adoption among skilled nursing facilities received good support in stakeholder comments following publication in early May of the proposed rule.
