CareFusion, a vendor of medication management systems, has integrated its Alaris smart infusion pumps to the Cerner Millennium electronic health records at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota.

The integration is the fourth time CareFusion has linked one of it systems to Millennium using Cerner’s CareAware iBus connectivity tools, following a 2010 agreement between the vendors. The previous systems were the Pyxis automated medication dispensing system, regular Alaris infusion pumps and the ventilation system.

At Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, the integration covers pump and syringe modules of the Alaris system. The system is wirelessly prepopulated with infusion order parameters from the EHR and the smart pump is programmed by scanning a bar code on the pump that contains information from Cerner’s Point of Care Medication Administration system.

About two-thirds of the hospital’s 347 beds are considered critical care beds with patients requiring substantial infusions.
