Cardinal Health Foundation has awarded 40 grants totaling more than $1 million for care improvement efforts, with a strong focus on medication safety.

Twenty-eight of the grants will support medication management programs. Remaining funds will support operating room safety initiatives. The grants range in value from $7,500 to $37,500.

Medication safety programs provided grant funding include initiatives to implement computerized provider order entry and bar code-enabled medication administration systems, improve medication reconciliation processes at discharge, provide pharmacists with patient diagnosis on electronic prescription orders, and use of a dedicated pharmacist to improve medication safety.

Cardinal Health Foundation now has awarded 108 million grants totaling more than $3 million during the past three years for patient safety and cost effectiveness improvement programs. For more information and the list of 2010 grant awardees, click here.
