Cancer provider adopts system integrating decision support into EHR
Clinicians can access order sets, clinical guidance at the point of care, says George Daneker Jr.
Cancer Treatment Centers of America is collaborating with three healthcare IT vendors to implement a customized solution that enables clinical decision support for cancer treatment that’s provided within clinicians’ workflow, enabled by the electronic health records system.
The national provider of care treatment is working with Allscripts, which supplies the organization’s Sunrise EHR, as well as NantHealth and eviti, which provide clinical decision support capabilities for the new approach.
By integrating the clinical decision support component, Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) executives say the resulting Clinical Pathways program helps inform the cancer treatment process, without interrupting the physician's clinical workflow. The direct interface of the NantHealth was created with the input of hundreds of oncologists across the nation and holds a comprehensive collection of evolving cancer care data.

Cancer Treatment Centers, Allscripts and NantHealth began planning this project last year to help patients and providers, said Paul Black, Allscripts Chief Executive Officer. The solution "enhances and improves the chemotherapy regimen selection and ordering process, and ultimately, the quality of care CTCA provides to its patients."
Clinical Pathways integrates the latest cancer research available, treatment regimens and complementary therapies into the Allscripts Sunrise EHR, which gives oncologists the ability to create a curated list of care protocols at the point of care. The treatment platform provides custom treatment regimens for specific patients and their conditions; comparisons between treatment options; computer order entry capabilities; treatment regimens recommended by eviti, which are then mapped back into the EHR to proprietary CTCA order sets; access to recent guidelines; clinical data; and real-time functionality.
"Clinical Pathways presents all appropriate treatment options. It also helps eliminate potential guesswork by clinicians routinely inundated with new data and oncology research," said George Daneker, Jr., MD, Chief Medical Officer at CTCA at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. "We created an ecosystem of treatment options, customized to the CTCA standard of care, for patients to review and choose from that's safe and efficient."
The integration of the eviti solution with Allscripts Sunrise EHR for Clinical Pathways allows physicians to retrieve information from an unbiased Evidence-Based Medical Library, which encompasses more than 2,700 of the most appropriate evidence-based treatment regimens covering all cancers and cancer subtypes and all modalities.
