Buy will Boost Abbott’s Lab Services

Abbott Laboratories, a manufacturer of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, will acquire laboratory information management systems vendor STARLIMS Technologies Ltd. for $123 million in cash. The companies expect the acquisition to close during the first quarter of 2010.


Abbott Laboratories, a manufacturer of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, will acquire laboratory information management systems vendor STARLIMS Technologies Ltd. for $123 million in cash. The companies expect the acquisition to close during the first quarter of 2010.

Israel-based STARLIMS sells Web-based systems designed for an array of laboratory environments covering various disciplines and industries, according to the Israel-based vendor. Target markets include life sciences, government agencies and manufacturing firms. The company serves more than 500 organizations in 40 nations.

The acquisition will strengthen Abbott's position in the global diagnostics market, providing new tools to help laboratories store, retrieve and analyze clinical, managerial and administrative data, according to the Abbott Park, Ill.-based company.
