The National Library of Medicine has released an application that enables provider organizations and software vendors to link patient Web portals and electronic health records systems to the medical information content of MedlinePlus.

The application, called MedlinePlus Connect, enables easy access to content directly related to specific diagnoses, medications or lab tests, according to NLM. It also meets a meaningful use menu measure to provide patient-specific educational resources.

MedlinePlus Connect supports such coding standards as ICD-9-CM, SNOMED CT CORE Problem List Subset, RxNorm, NDC and LOINC. It can serve any health I.T. system using the HL7 Infobutton Standard. NLM will maintain vocabulary mappings and topic links.

Technical documentation for MedlinePlus Connect is available here, with additional information here. The application is free and registration is not required.
