MONOC Mobile Health Services, a Neptune, N.J.-based emergency medical services agency serving eight counties in eastern New Jersey, has deployed mobile communications "hotspot" technology in its ambulance fleet.

The technology is the onBoard Mobile Gateway product of in Motion Technology, Vancouver, Canada. The gateway uses GPS technology to map and monitor cellular networks, connecting each unit with the carrier with the best coverage. Crews can use the networks to send and receive patient records, e-mails, dispatches and other information.

Other software from the vendor, the onBoard Mobility Manager, tracks the location, direction and speed of vehicles, and monitors engine performance. MONOC Mobile Health Services is testing additional sensing technology that monitors the inventory and temperature of medications.
