Xerox Jumps into Population Health Management with Acquisition

Xerox has acquired Healthy Communities Institute, which offers a cloud-based analytics and collaboration platform for 260 hospitals, 75 health departments, 60 stakeholder coalitions, chambers of commerce and employers, among other clients.

Through its Midas+ data analytics platform, Xerox serves more than 2,200 healthcare provider sites managing and analyzing such areas as workflow, regulatory compliance, risk-adjusting, physician benchmarking, case management, and real-time predictive analytics on changes in patient health status.

Provider customers may be better informed on what is happening within their facilities, but now Xerox wants to take them—and itself—outside the walls and into communities as providers now are taking on risk outside the walls. That’s why the company has acquired Healthy Communities Institute, which offers a cloud-based analytics and collaboration platform for 260 hospitals, 75 health departments, 60 stakeholder coalitions, chambers of commerce and employers, among other clients. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Healthy Communities also has a database of evidence-based programs and policies that improve community health. That includes an automated tracking system that supports the federal Healthy People 2020 initiative, and in turn enables accountable care organizations and other stakeholders to evaluate and track progress in meeting population health management goals, says Deryk Van Brunt, previously president and CEO at Healthy Communities and now senior vice president and general manager of community health at Midas+.

For instance, Healthy Communities offers a dashboard of 150 indicators to determine health status in a community, Van Brunt explains. These include mitigating factors such as air and water quality, crime, transportation and substance abuse, among other variables—all of which open the eyes of stakeholders to challenges they will face while working to improve population health.

For now, Xerox will focus its population health management services domestically, but because Healthy Communities was created to support the World Health Organization’s Global Healthy Cities Movement, the company has long-term eyes on going international, says Justin Lanning, senior vice president and managing director at Midas+. Between Xerox and Healthy Communities, the company now has solutions covering 95 percent of data that determines population health management, he adds.
