St. Luke's Episcopal Health System has expanded its contract with Seattle-based NetMotion Wireless.

The Houston-based delivery system now will use the vendor's Mobility XE virtual private network to support 900 of its notebook PCs and other mobile devices. The system is designed to enhance mobile performance by enabling devices to stay connected as users move between access points or networks.

St. Luke's was one of the first users of the Mobility system, signing an agreement in 2000 to use it with 20 devices. In 2002 it added 250 more devices to the contract. The delivery system is using the mobile devices to access its electronic health records system from MedPlus Inc., Mason, Ohio, and CareFusion blood management system from Cardinal Health, Dublin, Ohio.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
