FCC May Expand Medical Spectrum

The Federal Communications Commission has published a proposed rule to provide additional spectrum--or more radio frequencies--to support certain wireless medical devices.

The expanded spectrum would support use of "wireless micro-power networks," that would be comprised of networked and implanted electrical stimulation devices. The devices would send electric currents to activate and monitor nerves and muscles for those suffering from various neuromusculoskeletal disorders.

Under the proposed rule, the FCC seeks comment on the suitability of four segments of the 413-547 MHz band being made available for micro-powered networks or other similar bandwidth intensive medical implant networks. Federal agencies currently use most of this band for land mobile radio and radar operations.

The proposed rule was published May 13 in the Federal Register, at gpoaccess.gov/fr/index.html.
