Telecommunications giant Verizon soon will unveil a Web-based health information exchange service.

Scalable for various sized entities, the Verizon-hosted HIE will enable use of existing organizational information systems, processes and workflows without large capital expenditures, according to the Basking Ridge, N.J.-based vendor.

Verizon's partners in the venture are Richmond, Va.-based MedVirginia; Warwick, R.I.-based MEDfx Corp.; and Redwood Shores, Calif.-based Oracle Corp.

MedVirginia, also the first client, will replace its core HIE platform from Wellogic with the Verizon HIE. MedVirginia brings institutional knowledge to the venture with five years experience in developing approaches to governance and policy development, and perspectives from regional and state levels, says Michael Matthews, CEO. "We know the areas of policy that need to be developed."

MEDfx brings Web portal and systems integration technology to Verizon's HIE, and Oracle contributes enterprise master patient index software, a health transactions processing engine and database systems.
