N.C. Hospital to Track Assets

Lumberton, N.C.-based Southeastern Regional Medical Center will implement asset tracking technology from RadarFind Corp., Morrisville, N.C.

The RadarFind Real Time Location System relies on tags attached to supplies and equipment that send location data to readers and ultimately to an application via radio frequency identification signals.

The system’s readers plug into electrical outlets, rather than an RFID or WiFi network. They communicate the location data to a collector box, located in a data storage closet, which analyzes the information before presenting it to the application. The system also can integrate with a hospital's clinical information systems.

The 337-bed hospital will use the technology to track IV pumps, stretchers, wheelchairs and mobile monitors, among other equipment. The hospital expects the system to be fully operational by the second quarter of 2008.

More information is available at srmc.org and radarfind.com.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
