The system uses real-time location software from Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM, and ultrasound tags and receivers from Sonitor Technologies Inc., Bothell, Wash. Ultrasound tags can be attached to equipment to broadcast a unique identification signal to receivers without the risk of electromagnetic interference with patient monitors and other equipment, according to the vendors.
The IBM software can issue alerts if equipment is not where it should be, such as a heart monitor leaving an assigned area or a crash cart sitting in the hallway for an extended period.
