Networking vendor Cisco Systems has contracted with Walgreens to operate a comprehensive clinical clinic and pharmacy for up to 40,000 employees and their dependents at Cisco headquarters in San Jose, Calif.

Using its own telemedicine technologies, Cisco also is enabling about 3,600 employees at its Durham, N.C.-based facility to have teleconsultations with clinicians at the San Jose clinic.

Walgreens owns Take Care Health Systems, a chain of convenient care clinics and employer-based health and wellness centers. More than 30 clinicians staff the San Jose facility, including physicians, registered nurses, pharmacists, and physical therapists. A registered nurse in Durham will facilitate teleconsultations.

Looking to build better care coordination, health systems are buying physician groups in droves. Making the deal work, however, requires careful management on the I.T. front.
