Report Promotes In-Home Monitoring

In-home remote monitoring technologies can support a growing trend to refocus patient care away from acute care and ambulatory settings and into the home, according to a new report from the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions, New York. Such technologies also can save $400 billion annually, report authors predict.

“We believe the home is an important place to start,” according to the report. “The effective application of in-home technologies leads to increased medication adherence, reduced avoidable post-acute complications, and improved self-care management of chronic conditions.”

Technology, however, is only an enabler that must be incorporated into a personalized care management program that is embedded into a patient’s daily activities, the report contends. A recent Deloitte online survey of 3,000 adults found strong support for in-home technologies that connect patients with their caregivers. For survey results, click here.

The new report, “Connected Care: Technology Enabled Care at Home,” outlines chronic conditions in the home that information technologies are well suited to support as part of treatment, and the types of technologies available. For the report, click here.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
