Tavenner Selected Again for CMS Head

President Obama has renominated Marilyn Tavenner to serve as administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Tavenner was nominated in November 2011 to succeed Donald Berwick, M.D., and has served as acting administrator as the Senate never even held a confirmation hearing. The initial nomination expired at the end of 2012 and she now has been re-selected, but political newspapers The Hill and Politico caution that a Senate still deeply divided over health care issues isn’t a lock to confirm this time around. In that case, she would continue as an acting administrator. The Senate has not confirmed a CMS administrator since 2006.

The American Medical Association and American Hospital Association both issued statements supporting the renomination.
