Cornwall, England-based Research Instruments has introduced technology to identify and track the sperm, eggs, resulting embryos and other materials used in in-vitro fertilization treatments.

The IVF Witness system uses radio frequency identification tags to track the materials during the course of treatment. It alerts staff members via visual and audible signals if the wrong material is introduced in the lab environment.

Each patient is given an RFID identity card with a unique identification that is used with all sample materials for the patient, including Petri dishes and test tubes. More information is available at research-instruments.com.
