The HHS grants include $386 million to 40 states or state-designated entities to facilitate state-level HIEs. Another $375 million from HHS was awarded to 32 not-for-profit organizations to develop and operate regional extension centers to offer technical assistance to providers. The stimulus package authorizes funds for up to 70 such centers.
The Department of Labor awarded $227 million to 55 initiatives in 30 states for health I.T. training programs sponsored by community colleges and universities. Through local partnerships, grant recipients have identified about 10,000 job openings likely to be available during the next two years, according to the department.
