The Health Resources and Services Administration in the Department of Health and Human Services has announced grants totaling $27.8 million to implement electronic health records and other information technology initiatives.

The grants are part of the $2 billion allotted to HRSA under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for a variety of initiatives to expand care to low-income and uninsured populations. The I.T. grants were awarded to 27 organizations and range from $400,000 to $1.86 million.

Eighteen grants totaling $22.6 million will support EHR implementation. Four organizations received $2.6 million in grants for various initiatives including creating health information exchanges and automating records at dental practices. Five grants totaling more than $2.5 million went for using existing EHRs to improve patient outcomes.

The list of grant awardees is available at hhs.gov/news/press/2009pres/09/20090929a.html.
