States have until Oct. 16 to apply for federal funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to support health information exchange initiatives.
One grant will be awarded per state, ranging from $4 million to $40 million. Michigan, for instance, on Sept. 10 sent a letter to David Blumenthal, M.D., national coordinator for health information technology, confirming its intent to apply for HIE funds.
The state noted its progress since adopting a strategic plan to accelerate the use of health information technology. Michigan's government, for instance, has awarded seven regional health information exchange planning grants and two implementation grants.
