In summary, these hospitals have a half-day shorter patient length of stay, four percent fewer complications, six percent lower risk-adjusted mortality rates and perform better on 30-day readmission rates for multiple conditions, according to the vendor.
While optimal use of information technology is not among the core measures to be selected a Top 100 hospital, it doesnt hurt. Six of the hospitals are at Stage 7 of the HIMSS Analytics scale of electronic health records and overall health information technology achievement, the highest possible level.
The Stage 7 hospitals are: Stanford (Calif.) Health Care, UC San Diego Medical Center, North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago, Mercy Defiance (Ohio) Hospital and Banner Boswell Medical Center in Sun City, Ariz.
To select the Top 100, Truven Health used Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, along with core measures and patient satisfaction data from the federal Hospital Compare Web site to evaluate 3,000 short-term, acute care and non-federal hospitals.
Evaluations covered performance in 11 categories: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average stay, expenses, profitability, patient satisfaction, adherence to clinical standards of care, post-discharge mortality, readmission rates for heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia; and, for the first time, Medicare Spend per Beneficiary. This addition leverages CMS data to evaluate the cost incurred for an episode of care across settings pre- and post-discharge for Medicare patients, according to Truven Analytics.
