Crystal Lake, Ill.-based Leap of Faith Technologies has received a nearly $1 million grant from the National Institute on Aging, Bethesda, Md., to further develop its smart phone-based medication monitoring system.
The vendor's eMedonline application notifies patients at programmed intervals when they need to take their medications. Patients then scan the radio frequency identification tag or bar code on their medication before taking the drug.
The application sends the RFID or bar code information, along with dosage taken, missed dosages and other outcomes data, to a server where it can be analyzed by a health care provider or clinical trials manager. It also can be programmed to trigger alerts to providers to intervene to prevent adverse events as a result of missed medications.
The eMedonline system was originally developed with a grant from the National Cancer Institute for use in clinical trials. The latest grant totals $969,000. The National Institute on Aging also recently conducted usability studies with the technologies. Patients participating in the studies indicated that the system helped keep them aware and in touch with their medication regimen and prevented them from disregarding important symptoms.
