Kaufmannische Krankenkasse, a Hanover, Germany-based health insurer covering two million members in the nation, has contracted for about 10 million smart identification cards.
Munich-based Giesecke & Devrient, which has about 25% of the health care smart card market in Germany, will create the cards with distribution starting in January.
The smart cards initially will store such data as name, address, date of birth, voluntary emergency information, health insurance fund, details of insurance coverage, the cardholders status regarding supplementary charges, and a photo of the cardholder. The cards initially will be used for electronic prescriptions.
Cardholders will have the option of ordering a PIN Home Package that includes a card reader and software for a home PC. That will enable users to check the data on the card at any time. The cards also will support electronic signatures, so they also can be used to identify and authenticate individuals when they use other e-government applications.
