Siemens Buys HIE Vendor MobileMD

Siemens Healthcare has acquired health information exchange vendor MobileMD Inc. for an undisclosed sum.

Siemens Healthcare has acquired health information exchange vendor MobileMD Inc. for an undisclosed sum.

The acquisition is designed to enable Malvern, Pa.-based Siemens to provide value-added HIE services to hospitals and delivery systems as they consider participating in accountable care organizations and other initiatives to tie better care coordination and quality to reimbursement.

By using MobileMD's technology to enable hospitals and physicians to more easily share patient data, Siemens also is enhancing its ambulatory services. Siemens does not have core ambulatory products in-house, although it partners with NextGen Health Information Systems to serve physician practices. With the HIE software, a Siemens client can exchange data with physicians using various disparate information systems.

Yardley, Pa.-based Mobile MD serves more than 100 hospitals and 2,000 physician practices. Todd Fischer, formerly CEO at MobileMD, will continue to lead the firm as a vice president at Siemens and MobileMD employees will continue to report to him.
