Government and commercial information technology contractor SAIC will substantially expand its expertise in health information technology with a pending acquisition of Vitalize Consulting Solutions.

Terms of the acquisition, expected to close in early August, were not disclosed. Kennett Square, Pa.-based Vitalize specializes in strategic consulting, implementation, optimization, custom reporting and training of inpatient and ambulatory electronic health records systems.

Vendors it works with include Allscripts/Eclipsys, Cerner, eClinicalWorks, Epic, GE Healthcare, McKesson, Meditech, NextGen and Siemens, among others, with a primary focus on the commercial hospital market.

McLean, Va.-based SAIC says the acquisition will strengthen its existing government health business as it expects federal agencies to implement commercial EHR products. About 600 Vitalize employees will join SAIC's health solutions business unit.
