Information technology contractor Science Applications International Corp. will pay more than $473 million in cash to acquire maxIT Healthcare Holdings, a major independent consulting firm.

Westfield, Ind.-based maxIT, serving hospitals, group practices and delivery systems, specializes in I.T. strategic planning, implementation and management covering a range of health care information systems. It has particular expertise in systems from Allscripts, Cerner, eClinicalWorks, Epic, Lawson/PeopleSoft, McKesson, Meditech, NextGen and Siemens.

About 1,300 maxIT employees will join SAIC’s Health Solutions business unit. SAIC will combine maxIT with Vitalize Consulting Solutions, which it bought in 2011.

The companies expect to close the deal in August. SAIC expects at closing to pay about $473 million, then another $20 million after receipt of certain tax refunds following the close.

The acquisition will expand SAIC’s client base and increase its EHR and integration capabilities as federal health care customers increasingly adopt commercial off-the-shelf software, according to the firm.
