A manufacturer of prefilled contrast media syringes, used for patients undergoing certain radiology procedures, is applying RFID technology on the devices to help avoid errors.
Mansfield, Mass.-based Covidiens Ultraject syringes have an intelligent interface with RFID-enabled Optivantage DH power injectors. The interface helps radiology technologists ensure each patient receives the prescribed concentration and programmed dose of a contrast-media drug during a procedure, the company says.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the devices in May.
The interface enables the injector to physically alter the RFID label on the syringe once it is used to help reduce the probability of life-threatening air injections or air embolisms caused by accidentally using an empty, used syringe. The technology also reduces the potential for infection from cross-contamination by automatically preventing the injection of contents from a previously used RFID-labeled syringe in another patient exam, the company says. The RFID-based system also indicates if the drug in a syringe is past its expiration date.
