The VHA Foundation, the leadership and fundraising arm for the VHA Inc. health care alliance, has launched a two-year initiative designed to offer hospital CEOs a forum to discuss patient safety. The Irving, Texas-based organization's Health Care SafetyNetwork will enable the executives to learn from their peers and patient safety experts about ways to create a culture in their organization that emphasizes safety.
The program also will offer the CEOs an online database of leading practices and relevant content about patient safety issues. It will include case studies that focus on real-life experiences of their peers in dealing with patient safety issues, such as hospital-acquired infections.
The program also will include peer coaching as well as national recognition of organizations and leaders in patient safety. It was developed as a result of a 2008 survey by the VHA Foundation, which found that 68% of participating hospital leaders have faced a significant patient safety event in the past three years while less than 21% of those felt strongly confident about the practices put in place to prevent incidents and in their skills needed to handle one.
