The Department of Health and Human Services has published interim guidance on how to become a public safety organization.
The Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005 authorized creation of patient safety organizations. They are charged with creating confidential, non-punitive processes for reporting data on adverse patient events and analyzing it. They also are charged with creating standardized reporting processes across disparate health care organizations and other entities.
The interim guidance will enable HHS Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to begin receiving applications from entities that wish to become public safety organizations. However, a final rule from HHS expected by the end of 2008 will then supersede the interim guidance.
The guidance, however, will help interested organizations start now to undertake the work to become a public safety organization, says Carolyn Clancy, M.D., director of AHRQ.
The interim guidance, additional information on public safety organizations, and the previously published proposed rule are available at pso.ahrq.gov.
