San Francisco-based Quantros Inc. has introduced software to assist patient safety organizations in collecting, aggregating and analyzing data to reduce safety risks.

The Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005 authorized creation of patient safety organizations. They are charged with creating confidential and non-punitive processes for reporting data on adverse patient events and analyzing it. They also are charged with creating standardized reporting processes across disparate health care organizations and other entities.

Features of Quantros' Patient Safety Organization Manager application include:

* a secure system to extract and isolate protected confidential data so only authorized persons are permitted to view the data,

* administrative functions to set-up and manage participating organizations in a PSO,

* a module to submit data to an eventual network of patient safety databases, and

* generation of reports on individual or multiple facilities.

More information is available at quantros.com. Information about patient safety organizations is available at pso.ahrq.gov.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
