GE Healthcare, Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, N.Y., and the Healthcare Association of New York State will collaborate on research to use technology and best practices to improve the safety and efficiency of care.
The initiative includes testing of a Smart Patient Room at 180-bed Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital. The room will include optical sensors to track movement of clinicians and equipment, capture time between events and remotely read bar codes. For instance, sensors combined with artificial intelligence will monitor when hand washings occur and when they should have occurred. Other technology will collect data to compare actual treatment with clinical protocols.
GE and its partners also will develop the Patient-Safety Forecaster to calculate costs related to safety and adverse events. The tool also could help organizations more accurately predict the benefits of quality and safety investments, and track improvements over time.
