The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has a new Web site to aid critical access hospitals and small rural hospitals in adopting health information technology.

The goal is to have 1,000 such hospitals become electronic health records meaningful users by the end of 2014. The site includes information on the benefits of I.T. in rural settings, overcoming barriers to adoption, tools and resources from the government and private partners to support implementation, and federal funding opportunities for infrastructure such as hardware, software and broadband.

For instance, a toolkit from the Virginia Office of Telework Promotion & Broadband Assistance aids in obtaining affordable “last mile” broadband connectivity. Stratis Health has a toolkit to assess readiness for I.T. systems, then planning, selecting and implementing.

The ONC site is at http://www.healthit.gov/ruralhealth.
