TransUnion, a Chicago-based credit reporting firm, has received a patent for its technology that determines, in real time at the point of registration, whether a patient is eligible for financial assistance.
The Healthcare Revenue Cycle Platform uses financial aid information from federal, state and local assistance plans to help determine patient eligibility for assistance and patient responsibility for costs.
The platform, which is made available to providers through the application service provider computing model, features a rules-based decision engine. Providers input patient data at the time of service that is then cross-referenced with credit-sourced information to determine eligibility for benefit sources, including hospital-specific charity programs. It verifies patient identity, insurance eligibility and inaccuracies from self-reported data.
