Take Care Health Systems, which operates walk-in retail clinics in 350 Walgreens pharmacy stores, has introduced appointment scheduling online and in the clinics.

Patients now can schedule an appointment online at takecarehealth.com, and patients planning a walk-in visit can check the site for estimated wait times. The site also enables access to HEDIS patient satisfaction and quality of care scores.

Rand Corp. estimates use of walk-in clinics has increased 10-fold in two years, and the basic care provided by nurse practitioners and physician assistants is up to 40 percent less expensive than in a physician office.

It is free enterprise and a focus to increase store sells that drives this program. God bless America. The statement "up to 40% savings" over regular doctor fees gets to the heart of the issue. Using that same approach - a medical practice can dispense, with the appropriate license, drugs at an enormous savings It is easier for a group medical practice to become a drug store than a drug store becoming a true source of medical care. Until a full complement of services, including a doctor on site and real diagnostic ability is available - Walgreens is cherry picking the easy ambulatory services with no continuity of care - just visit notes. We are now actively showing doctors how their group can become a dispensing facility, offer drug discounts better than the retail outlets - and do it in the integration of "continuity of care model. Again, God Bless America. It also achieves better compliance in making sure the patients are taking the medicine prescribed under better case management. We are now including in our program a competitive awareness strategy - why encourage any prescription the doctor's write to be filled at a Walgreens or CVS. The response to the program in patient appreciation is far greater than even we had expected, and the doctors love it too.

Looking to build better care coordination, health systems are buying physician groups in droves. Making the deal work, however, requires careful management on the I.T. front.
