Microsoft Funds More I.T. Research

Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft Corp. has awarded an additional $850,000 in grants for health care I.T. The software giant already has awarded more than $2.5 million for several different initiatives through its External Research & Programs unit.

The latest round of funding was issued through the unit's Computational Challenges of Genome Wide Association Studies Program. It will help fund six projects that were selected from 40 proposals. They include:

*The development of a software and data management system by Purdue University that can help predict and prevent adverse drug responses and provide in-depth training for physicians and pharmacists to better understand the link between genes, drug metabolism and the risk of adverse drug responses within prescription medicine;

*The creation of a universal data format by the Translational Genomics Research Institute that would integrate multiple vendor platforms for genomic research into a single file and software library;

*The discovery of genes by the National Institutes of Health that are relevant to the development of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS disease) and other neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's disease;

*The development of computational tools by the University of California to help explain the linkages between the pathways of genes that are associated with a disorder;

*The development of advanced informatics methods by Columbia University to convert raw health records data into usable research information; and

*The building of a data-quality management environment by the University of the Republic of Uruguay that would enable users to define and evaluate biological-oriented data quality properties over specific data sources.
