A new report from the National eHealth Collaborative lays out the existing health information exchange landscape and where the industry needs to go.

The not-for-profit collaborative receives funds from the Office of the National Coordinator for HIT to provide operational, logistical and administrative support to NHIN Exchange, a group of federal agencies, health information exchanges and delivery systems demonstrating live HIE through the emerging Nationwide Health Information Network. The collaborative also offers free Web seminars about the NHIN and related issues.

The new report is titled “Health Information Exchange Roadmap: The Landscape and a Path Forward.” It explains the NHIN and lists 26 participating organizations, along with nearly 30 others in the process of joining and 14 participating vendors. The report also explains the federally funded CONNECT software to link to NHIN and the Direct Project secure messaging initiatives, as well as different approaches being taken by regional, state and private HIEs.

In addition, crucial HIE development steps such as objectives and vision, market assessment, strategy development and strategy implementation are discussed. The report is available at nationalehealth.org/hie-roadmap.
