A new report offers modeling approaches for states to use as they analyze the scope that a state health insurance exchange should be. The exchanges are mandated under the Accountable Care Act.

Questions about the exchange include its potential size, how many individuals eligible to purchase health coverage though an exchange likely will do so, and the size limit for small businesses participating the exchange, among other factors.

States must weigh tradeoffs associated with different modeling approaches and data sources, and remain realistic about the limitations of such analyses, according to the report from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded State Coverage Initiatives and State Health Access Data Assistance programs.

The report, "Health Insurance Exchanges: How Economic and Financial Modeling Can Support State Implementation," is available at http://rwjf.org/coverage/product.jsp?id=71470.
