Hospital Puts Registration Kiosk in ER

Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn will implement patient self-service registration kiosks in its emergency department.

The 627-bed public hospital will use the MediKiosk product of Maitland, Fla.-based Galvanon Inc. to streamline the check-in and triage processes. Patients entering the department will use the kiosk instead of waiting in line to explain their symptoms and give demographic and insurance information. They will point to areas on a body diagram where they feel pain and answer questions about the nature of their visit.

The information will be sent to a nurse to review and to prioritize the patient’s treatment based on medical need, not the time they came in. More information is available at galvanon.com.

Looking to build better care coordination, health systems are buying physician groups in droves. Making the deal work, however, requires careful management on the I.T. front.
