The American College of Radiology in July will go live with a database to support mammography best practices.

The National Mammography Database will enable mammography facilities to compare their performance and outcomes to similar facilities, according to the Reston, Va.-based organization. The database will support benchmarking of such issues as cancer detection rates, positive prediction values and recall rates.

The new database will leverage data that mammography facilities already collect under federal mandate. Participating facilities will be able to upload data from radiology and other systems to the database through the Internet. They will receive semiannual reports with comparative data. Data from the National Mammography Database also can be shared across other American College of Radiology databases that a facility uses.

Facilities registering for the new mammography database by January will receive a 50% discount off 2009 and 2010 annual membership fees. For more information, send e-mail to nrdr@acr.org.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
