The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society has named Cherokee (N.C.) Indian Hospital Authority and the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services as winners of the 2008 Nicholas E. Davies Public Health Award of Excellence.
The award recognizes the use of information technology and management to improve the health of a defined population. Chicago-based HIMSS added a public health category to its Davies Award program in 2004.
Cherokee Indian Hospital is the primary provider for more than 10,000 members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Using I.T. tools, the hospital increased tobacco use screening from 43% in 2004 to 80% in 2007. During the same period, it increased domestic violence screening. Now, some 80% of patients undergo the screening when appropriate. In the past, virtually none did.
The New Jersey health department used its Communicable Disease Reporting and Surveillance System to identify the cause of a multi-state E. coli outbreak.
The award winners applications containing more information on their initiatives are posted at himss.org/ASP/davies_publichealth.asp.
