An undisclosed number of employees at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Mich., have been disciplined and possibly fired after accessing or attempting to access the electronic medical records of Gov. Jennifer Granholm, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Granholm was hospitalized in April for emergency abdominal surgery. The breaches were found in a routine audit, but the hospital did not disclose the breaches or notify Granholm until August 6 after the Free Press inquired about the incidents.
Legislation being considered in Congress, H.R. 6357, would require that affected individuals be notified of privacy breaches.
